Introduction
This political cartoon titled “La Conquista Pacifica” appeared in the Mexican newspaper El Moquete. This political cartoon was created by José Guadalupe, who was an artist in Mexico, in 1905. The political cartoon depicts Uncle Sam, representing the United States, speaking with what appears to be a United States officer who has a half animal, half human figure on a leash with the words “Republica de Sierra Madre” which is the name of a place in Mexico.
This political cartoon shows sentiments of Mexico towards the U.S. This illustration demonstrates feelings of intrusion, invasion, and control by the U.S. towards Mexico. By having this political cartoon in El Moquete shows that the newspaper along with its viewers feel the meddling of the United States in Mexico’s Affairs. With this political cartoon being from 1905, the “Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Limits, and Settlement with the Republic of Mexico” has already been signed and supposedly accepted but the people of Mexico still be suffocated and controlled by the United States.
